‘A Perfect Fit:’ Adoption Update & Note From Dior’s New Family

We have a heartwarming adoption update for you today! But first, let’s give you a little bit of background. If you’ve been following the Snow Owl journey for a while, you’re probably aware that we have an adoption program that works to find our retired sled dogs amazing homes with incredible owners. While nothing warms our hearts more than finding perfectly suited homes for members of our pack, we take the process incredibly seriously. Huskies, and especially working dogs, are different from regular pet dogs. These intelligent canines require experienced dog owners. The process is meticulous and gives us complete peace of mind. We’re incredibly grateful for the passionate and patient prospective owners who have worked with us on this process. We’re delighted to recieve updates on how our retirees are getting on in their new environments. Because we love a good news story, we also love to share these updates with you. Today, we have an update on Dior, a member of our pack that was adopted in October of 2023.

Dior’s New Home: Adoption Update

Dior, lovingly referred to as “Deedee” by her new family, was adopted by Jennifer Cairney and her son Zach in October of 2023. Jennifer officially began her search for a new furry family member in July and was over the moon to take Dior home four months later. Jennifer, Zach, and Dior live in Calgary, where they take full advantage of the quick trips out to the mountains. In Dior’s new home, she’s got a furry playmate to hang out with, “a 4-year-old beast of a dog named Charlie,” Jennifer explained. “He’s a Bernedoodle Lab Cross, but I am sure there is something else there due to his giant size.”

Jennifer and her family aren’t new to the world of husky ownership. “Since my two former huskies passed away, (Bear 1997-2006, Mowgli 2001-2016), with the most recent one being 7 years ago, I had always felt somewhat of a void. I was very attached to Mowgli, and missed his cheeky husky attitude, nose kisses and mountain adventures,” she shared. “I had known about Snowy Owl’s adoption program for a long time and decided it was time to start the process. I am very glad I did.”

Jennifer and Zach love that Dior is so sweet and incredibly chill. “She has a cheeky side to her; she’s talkative and friendly to all she meets. Dior and Charlie get along so well. I love that I have a floofy husky again and how Dior gets super excited when I come home and greets me at the gate or door,” Jennifer told us in her adoption update.

Dior In Her New Environment

In her new environment, Dior loves suntanning in the snow out in her new backyard, even at those -49 Alberta temperatures. True to her nature, as always. She’s also a big fan of walks in the coulee and playing with her new roommate, Charlie.

The former sled dog has learned a lot in her new home. “Dior has learned to master the stairs to go in and out of the house. She prefers to stay on the main level rather than venturing to the basement or top floor, as just like her fur-momma, her joints aren’t what they used to be. She has learned that if she stares at my son long enough, she will get extra treats! Dior has also been awesome with letting us know when she has to go out to the bathroom and when she needs extra bum scritches.”

In providing this adoption update, Jennifer told us about her experience with the Snoy Owl adoption program.

“It absolutely met all expectations. I really appreciate the fact that there is such a strict screening process for adopting a Snowy Owl Husky Hero. It allowed us to really see which dog was a great fit for our family and showed how important it was for Snowy Owl to find the right owner(s) for their dogs. Dior is such a sweetheart and is a perfect fit for us.”

Our hearts were warmed to hear that Dior is acclimating so well to her new home and life. Thank you, Jennifer, for your love and care throughout the process, and thank you for welcoming Dior to your family.
